1968 Harley Davidson xlch Sportster Project |
|
This story starts off many years ago 1963, when I was a junior in high school. My father owned a Harley Davidson dealership and I grew up as a young boy and alway had a motorcycle. My first bike was a small Harley 125cc and it was called a "One Twenty Five". Dad helped me put together an old 1949 model from the spare parts room. We built my first chopper!! it looked like a Sportster! Next was a 165cc then Harley's Italian import the "Sprint" it was a 1962 250cc single 4 stroke pretty bad for those days!! tried to make it look like a Sportster. Then in 1964 Dad put me on a new XLCH Sportster the shop demonstrator was a 883cc competition model, black & white. WOW what a time as a teenager back in those days!!!it became MY bike. Off to the Air Force stationed in Texas Dad sent me a brand new XLCH in a crate which I road while I was at Dyess AFB a little over 3 years. After coming home after joining civilian life again I thought I would sell the Sportster and do some Motocross. Sure missed not having a Sportster. I picked up an old diamond in the rough and started to bring it back to life and it was a 1968 XLCH that had been turned into a chopper with a blown engine. Once rebuilt back to its original condition it became my pride and joy throughout the early and middle 1970's. As the new imports became my choice of riding, the Sportster was rolled over in the corner of the garage and covered up. A few years went by and I decided to tear it down and do some re-chroming and repainting and re-building. Well working and raising a family and enjoying the larger touring Honda Goldwing the Sportster ended up apart and in boxes over 25 years. Not until I retired in 1999 and moved to Tennessee did I even attempt to revive the Harley project. I decided this would be my 1st retirement project. Well retirement is a busy time and here it is over 8 years later and the project is starting to finally take shape!! Below are a few pictures of the progress. |
